'A Whole Life' is deceptive in its simplicity. And whilst he does not seem dissatisfied with his life, he seems far from fulfilled, which adds to the bleak and desolate landscape. But at the same time there is something desperately sad about how lonely he appears. In this Egger is stoic, which I can admire. As modernity permeates his village, Andreas Egger pushes back with his vision of how things should be and does not allow himself to be swept up in the transformation. Naturally a lone wolf, we follow Egger as he withdraws further into solitude, seemingly abhorrent of human contact. Through Egger, we see the result of real trauma and the impact of a tragic event. Robert Seethaler expertly depicts real emotion through him, and the result is extremely moving. I was struck by Andreas Egger as a character. The narrative is not linear, so although it is at times difficult to keep track of the timeline, this technique suits the feel of the novel (navigating through ambiguity in times of change). Charlotte Collins skilfully captures the bleak yet beautiful atmosphere through her translation. Set against a pastoral landscape, Seethaler's writing style is somewhat reminiscent of Thomas Hardy's novels. FebruREVIEW: Catfishing on CatNet: A Novel (A CatNet Novel Book 1) by Naomi Kritzer I never told you, but our life is a war and I have been a traitor all my born days, a spy in the enemy's country ever since I give up my gun back in the Reconstruction. On his deathbed he called my father to him and said, "Son, after I'm gone I want you to keep up the good fight. He was an odd old guy, my grandfather, and I am told I take after him. They stayed in their place, worked hard, and brought up my father to do the same. About eighty-five years ago they were told that they were free, united with others of our country in everything pertaining to the common good, and, in everything social, separate like the fingers of the hand. I am only ashamed of myself for having at one time been ashamed. I am not ashamed of my grandparents for having been slaves. I was in the cards, other things having been equal (or unequal) eighty-five years ago. But first I had to discover that I am an invisible man! And yet I am no freak of nature, nor of history. It took me a long time and much painful boomeranging of my expectations to achieve a realization everyone else appears to have been born with: That I am nobody but myself. I was looking for myself and asking everyone except myself questions which I, and only I, could answer. I accepted their answers too, though they were often in contradiction and even self-contradictory. All my life I had been looking for something, and everywhere I turned someone tried to tell me what it was. It goes a long way back, some twenty years. The plot finally thickens halfway through, when Violet’s resemblance to Luca’s family is discovered and their burgeoning romance interrupted by attempts on her life. Violet sets her sights on handsome Luca, whose family owns Castello di Vesperi. Cultures clash, but strife recedes as the girls unite against the unspeakable Elisa, Catia’s daughter, in pursuit of hot Italian boys, beginning with Elisa’s brother, Leonardo. Joining Violet are working-class Kelly, another Brit, and two rich American girls: blonde Paige and African-American Kendra. Tracing the painting’s provenance to Castello di Vesperi in Tuscany, Violet wheedles her mother into sending her to Villa Barbiano, whose formidable owner, Catia, offers summer instruction in the Italian language, art and art history. Child of Nordic/Scottish parents, Violet-short, dark, curvy-feels like one of a kind until she discovers her uncanny resemblance to the Italian girl depicted in a 1790 portrait. There was a Book containing those of Epaminondas and Scipio the younger. In the Parallel Lives themselves there are gaps. Artaxerxes and Aratus the statesman, are detached narratives, like others which once, we are told, existed, Hercules, Aristomenes, Hesiod, Pindar, Daiphantus, Crates the cynic, and Aratus the poet. Otho and Galba belonged, probably, to a series of Roman Emperors from Augustus to Vitellius. To the proper work, the Parallel Lives, narrated in a series of Books, each containing the accounts of one Greek and one Roman, followed by a Comparison, some single lives have been appended, for no reason but that they are also biographies. The collection so well known as "Plutarch's Lives," is neither in form nor in arrangement what its author left behind him. The two women engage in an argument during which it becomes apparent that Bertha is accusing Lily of seducing Dorset in order to mask her own infidelity. When Lily notes the discrepancy, Bertha blames the inconsistency on her husband's "attack" of nerves. Lily speaks with Bertha, who tells a slightly different version of the story she had previously related to Dorset. Suspecting his wife has been unfaithful, Dorset takes Lily's advice to seek Selden's legal counsel. He relates Bertha's excuse, which includes a preposterous scenario of a carriage drawn by one lame horse. Lily then encounters Dorset, who tells Lily that Silverton and Bertha did not return to the Sabrina until after seven in the morning. Lily protests that she and Dorset had waited for Bertha and Silverton at the train station, but the second couple never arrived. Carry reveals that the society writer Dabham has told everyone that he witnessed Lily returning alone with Dorset the previous evening after midnight. She advises Lily to accept the position because she believes Lily is on the verge of social scandal. On her way to breakfast, Lily encounters Carry, who offers Lily the chance to replace her as the Brys' social consort. Instead, Lily leaves the yacht to attend a breakfast with the Duchess of Beltshire. She requests a meeting with Bertha but is rebuffed. The following morning, Lily awakens aboard the Dorsets' yacht, the Sabrina.
